Poster design in the name of Rock & Roll
The 2012 Rock The Rink concert planned for January 19 in Purcellville, Virginia. The organizing group wanted to promote the event with a bold, eye catching poster. After reviewing the complete requirements for the event, and the poster, we went to work designing a piece that was meant for print resolution at a size of 11 by 17 inches. This large image would then be reused in a smaller size for promoting on the website, for tickets, newspaper advertising and the Facebook page.
The target audience for this event is high school students. Taking that into account, we wanted to create a poster design that caught the eye from a distance. Starting with contrasting angled lines, we blended familiar objects to provide a feeling of motion. One of challenges in creating an effective poster is not only to introduce a sense of good design, but also to include the necessary event information using balance and taste. Fitting the words in just right can be a tricky task. The best printed design media successfully blends the messaging into the finished piece. In the end, the marketing but be easy to read and interpret.
To create the amplifier grill effect, we used a 3D modeling program to layout a grid of rectangle shapes. The spaces between the shapes are revealed in the poster itself, not the actual 3D objects. The rendered grid images was then imported into Photoshop. Various filters where then applied to provide further lighting enhancements. Several of the shiny edge shapes were also made in the 3D modeling program. They began as organic, curved objects that were given a shiny black surface. Once rendered, they provided the exact look and feel we had in mind to embellish the design with style.
You can expect to see this poster design in various Loudoun locations including your favorite store windows, newspapers and behind small engine aircraft flying over our county (not really). Leave a comment here is you happen to see the poster, or attend the event. We’re quite confident that we could create a website design for this annual Loudoun event. This design would make for a terrific backdrop for such a website design. See this poster design appearing in the January 11, 2013 issue of the Purcellville Gazette.
